A question for anybody in the know.
I've decided to build an 03a3 from parts. I mean what a better way to learn the in's and out's of the old rifle, right?
A friend lent me a CMP 1903 and a 1903a3 to shoot for a while, and let me tell you, they shoot as good as I can, but I,ve found something interesting about them in comparison to the surplus parts I've purchased recently.
The bolts on both of my friends rifles work effortlessly. Two fingers is all it takes. Now my kit gun takes alot more effort to get the bolt into battery due to the fact that the safety lug has considerable interference against the reciever. In Joe Poyers book he mentions just a few basic things about the safety lug. The length of the lug is .750" and clearance between the back of the lug and the receiver should be .004" when in battery.
Well, both of the bolts I bought are Remington surplus and they are .740 in length, but both of my friends rifles bolts come in at .700" in length and have close to .03" thousandths of clearance when in battery, thus the easy action.
Finally my question. Is the .700" lug a modification, is it unique to a manufacturer or time period? I assume for the purpose of interchangability, all these important tolerances should be alot closer than this.
Just wondering if anybody had any info. Maybe if you have the means and time, you'all could measure the length of your safety lugs and the clearance from the reciever and let me know. Kind of an unscientific study, eh? |

Either one would be able to help you out. e-mail me and I'll get you their contact info, or if you post this on the CMP forum, I'm sure Phil will chime in as he's on that forum all the time answering questions such as these. Thanks Art. Your right, Phil was "Johnny on the spot" with some info on the CMP forum.

Yep, he's usually all over those kinda topics. He also really knows what he's talking about too, which is good! Take care and hope you get it worked out.
