Posted - 10/24/2012 : 09:44:51 All, I was finally able to get in contact with Eric Whitescarver from the NRA Range Tech. Team and Advisor program this morning. We now have an NRA case # and are at the top of the NRA list for assistance and evaluation since we have closed the outdoor range.
Eric stated that there is only one Team Advisor for this area and he is currently on another case, but was hopefull he could wrap that case up in a couple of weeks and turn his attention to us. In the interim, the NRA is sending us their consulting contract which I will have to sign and return. We will also have a copy of this for club records.
If anyone has any other questions, please feel free to contact me at anytime as I will be the point contact with the NRA in this matter. I will do my best to answer your questions/concerns. Also, the NRA WILL NOT discuss our case with anyone other than me since I am the contact person. That is their policy and I was told they do it for "security reasons", so please do not try and contact them in any way. I will post updates here as I receive them, please keep checking back.
Thanks to all for your patience in this and my apologies it has taken so long to get the ball rolling. Best,

Posted - 04/22/2013 : 21:23:44 The NRA Range Tech. arrived at the outdoor range this afternoon. A number of the board were on hand to answer questions and show him the range. All went very well. He told us that we were on the correct path to eliminating the issue and agreed that the range should only be open under supervision be it for a match or general club shooting. He also made some other comments regarding the range that he will include in his report. I don't expect his formal report for a few months, but it will be made available to all members once we have it. In the interim, the outdoor range starting next month will be open for 2 HP events, plus we will have it open for the general membership at specific times to come out and shoot with an RSO on site. Please check the event calendar. Thanks,

Posted - 04/15/2013 : 11:26:51 All, I talked with our Range Tech. this morning. Looks like he will be traveling here either next Monday or Tuesday for the range evaluation. While here he will tour the outdoor range, look over the aerial and topographical maps, review our membership requirements and policies and look over our SOPs. I don't expect that we will get a formal report of actions that we should take for a few months, but at least we have the process started. Any questions, please let me know. Thanks,

Posted - 04/09/2013 : 17:07:37 All, I received an e-mail from the NRA today which officially assigned our RTTA with his contact info. I will be contacting him ASAP to set up a time where we can meet, discuss our issues and give him a tour of the range. When that is set up, I will let everyone know. Thanks,

Posted - 03/12/2013 : 08:39:44 Dave, the range will be open this season, just not to the degree it was in the past. The board has decided to open the range to the general membership during specific times of the week, but only under the supervision of an NRA certified RSO. As you may or may not know, about 12 of us took the NRA course back in December. The times and dates are still to be finalized, but we should have them out before too much longer. When they do become finalized, I will post them to the event calendar.
As far as the NRA RTTA goes, I have spoken with Eric coninually on this matter, the last being about 10 minutes ago and they are doing their best to get us a Range Tech., basically they don't have enough tech's to cover everything and he said he is doing his best to find us one. I hope it won't be too much longer and the board appreciates everyone's patience. |

Posted - 03/11/2013 : 13:08:38 Are there any updates regarding the outdoor range?
I realize I am no longer a member, but my reapplying for membership will hinge on the status of the outdoor range, as will two other friends who also let their memberships lapse.
Thanks,

Posted - 12/21/2012 : 18:45:40 The 100 yard range should be moved to a north west direction and a new berm built. A snow fence should be strung across the 200 yard range so it can only be used when a range officer is present. Locks that record time, day and entry code are available and the gate should have a box constructed that will allow that type of a lock to be use so the club can track who enters the range and at what time they come and go. If we get no better response than grand haven did the range will remain closed to members. Then I would think that since the club only has half of the what it use to have to offer then maybe the clubs dues should be lowered or partial refund made.

Posted - 12/08/2012 : 20:16:31 Today, Sat. the 08th of Dec., 12 club and/or board members attended a NRA certified Basic Range Safety Officer course taught by another club member certified to do so. We took this course to further enhance safety, at both the outdoor and indoor ranges. This will also help in the re-opening of the outdoor range. Our goal at MPRC is one of safety and enjoyment of firearms, but safety is obviously paramount. To that end, I would ask that each member at MPRC be patient in our drive to re-open the outdoor range to the general memebership.
We are still waiting on the NRA to send us a certified NRA range Tech. Advisor, but in the interim we would like everyone to know that the board is also pursuing any and all options to help in this process. This course will definitley help in that process.
Also, I would like to point out an artice on MLive this week about N. Ottawa's situation in Grand Haven. They are now just beginning the process of re-opening their outdoor range after an incident in Sept. of 2011 in which rounds left their range and struck a housing development. The rounds were fired from the GVSU police department for thos of you not familiar with the incident. Here is a link to the article:
http://www.mlive.com/news/grand-rapids/index.ssf/2012/12/grand_haven_gun_club_begins_im.html#incart_river_default
I think the most pertinent detail for us is the following quote from the article:
"The club’s outdoor shooting range closed Sept. 29, 2011, following an incident earlier that day when a bullet left the shooting range during a Grand Valley State University Public Safety training exercise and hit a man in the nearby Cutter Park subdivision.
No criminal charges resulted from the incident.
In May, officials from the National Rifle Association evaluated, photographed, measured and gathered information about the shooting range grounds.
Neither Grand Haven Township nor gun club officials have yet received a final report of the NRA’s findings".
In essence it states that it took the NRA 7 MONTHS to get a Tech. Advisor to N. Ottawa and that they are still WAITING on the NRA report. We, at MPRC, are doing the best we can to avoid a range closing of this length of time and are continously communicating on a way to have the range open ASAP. We also welcome any all suggestions from anyone. If you have a thought or an idea please let any of the board memebers know. Thanks again for your patience,

Posted - 12/03/2012 : 11:05:31 I talked with Eric last week. The contract is signed by both parties, and we are now "just" waiting on a range tech. He is trying to find us one. The range techs are apparenty volunteers trained by the NRA and are sometimes hard to get and are stretched thin. He also told me to keep calling every few days to bug him and put us at the forefront of his tasks.
I did call this morning but had to leave a message. As soon as we get a range tech., I'll let everyone know. Again if anyone has questions, please don't hesitate to ask and I'll do my best to answer them. Thanks,

Posted - 11/15/2012 : 08:41:22 Talked with Eric this morning, he has the contract and it is signed and ready to go. He will be mailing back our copy and getting ahold of an RTTA for us. He did state that they are spread "thin", but I will stay in contact with him and keep us in the forefront until we can get someone out here. Thanks,

Posted - 11/06/2012 : 13:57:51 All, I received the Consulting Agreement from the NRA this morning. I will sign it and return it to the NRA today via USPS Priority Mail. Hopefully we will have an advisor on site in the next couple of weeks. In the interim I will stay in contact with the NRA and provide any new details here. Thanks,
